To explore this flexibility further, we interviewed Courtney McKinney to capture and share her experience of transitioning from Planning and Communications Services to the Asset Management Group.
How did you begin your career at McCormick Taylor?
I began my career at McCormick Taylor while looking for opportunities that would allow me to continue my education while leveraging my background in web design, content development, and graphic design. I found the role on LinkedIn, and from my very first interactions with Planning and Communications Services, I felt welcomed and supported as a Communications Specialist. I am grateful they gave me the opportunity to join their team and begin my journey with McCormick Taylor.
What led to your transition to the Asset Management Group?
During my first few years at McCormick Taylor, I pursued my M.S. in Data Analytics and later completed additional professional education through MIT Professional Education’s Applied Data Science Program. As the Asset Management Group was taking shape, I became increasingly interested because the work aligned closely with my interest in process improvements and data-driven decision making. When I saw a role in Asset Management listed, I reached out to the Asset Management Group’s Assistant Director to discuss how my background and experience could support her team.
How did McCormick Taylor support this transition?
The Planning and Communications Services team recognized both my interest in the role and my ability to contribute beyond my original position. They were incredibly supportive throughout the transition. Their willingness to support my professional growth made the change much easier, and I still enjoy staying connected with my Communications and Creative team members.
How has the transition affected you?
The transition has allowed me to collaborate with colleagues across the company whom I had not previously worked with. I’ve also gained valuable experience with ArcGIS Pro and GIS-related work while supporting projects for clients in different regions. It’s been interesting to learn how various agencies are structured and how they approach challenge.
Why was it important for you to make this life change while maintaining your employment at McCormick Taylor?
One of the biggest reasons I chose to continue my career with McCormick Taylor was the people. Leaders from both my previous and current groups have been instrumental in encouraging me to explore new opportunities. Staying with McCormick Taylor allowed me to pursue a new path while still being part of an organization full of kind, genuine, and professional people.
