What does it mean to you to be a PE?

Being a PE has helped me build confidence in my relationships with clients and the communities that I am working to improve. They can trust that the work I am producing meets specific standards based on my qualifications and they can feel safe in their daily lives when interacting with the infrastructure I am implementing. Being a PE also allows me to take ownership of my work. I have found that I perform my work through a different lens knowing that my name will be on it, and I will be taking responsibility.

What are your tips for young professionals preparing to sit for the PE Exam?

Everyone learns differently but what I found really helpful is doing as many practice problems as I could. If your schedule allows for it, try, and take a practice exam in conditions as close to the real exam as possible. The testing centers tend to book up far out so schedule your exam as soon as you decide you want to take it. If you take a preparation course, allow some time in between the end of the course and the time you take your exam to review the areas that didn’t click in the course.

What does it mean to you to be a PE?

What being a PE means to me is being able to show that I have the skills and knowledge needed to work on and provide input on engineering designs and challenges.

What are your tips for young professionals preparing to sit for the PE Exam?

For the young professionals preparing to sit for the PE Exam, my advice is to give yourself plenty of time to study. There is so much material to learn or relearn and you don’t want to have to rush yourself at the end to get through it all and not retain what you’ve looked at.

Kyle Kegarise, PE, Traffic Engineer, Harrisburg, PA

What does it mean to you to be a PE?

Becoming a PE means to me that all my hard work has paid off! I feel extremely proud to be able to officially call myself a Professional Engineer. I know those two letters behind my name come with added responsibility; however, I look forward to the opportunities being a PE might present.

What are your tips for young professionals preparing to sit for the PE Exam?

Lots and lots of practice problems. Ordering a couple of different sets is very helpful. I watched some videos of practice problems being worked through; however, you definitely don’t retain the information as well as when completing them yourself. With the new computer-based testing format, you are given the manuals/standards you need for the test, which is nice. This allows you to look over these manuals ahead of time and get familiar with what information they contain/what chapters to find the information in.
