DRY RIVER ROAD CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENTS
BRIDGEWATER, VA
This locally administered project consisted of the preparation of construction plans and bid documents for the reconstruction of approximately 2,400 linear feet of Dry River Road, which is a two-lane urban major collector that was historically a horse and buggy trail for those traveling in and out of the northwest part of town.
THE CHALLENGE
A significant challenge on this project was designing adequate connections from the reconstructed roadway on the north end of the project to several driveways on properties that were several feet higher than the roadway. In addition, the project area included a considerable amount of substandard soils that were going to be encountered during construction.
HOW WE HELPED
The project included curb and gutter and bike lanes on both sides of the road and a five-foot sidewalk on the west side of the road. Based on the recommendations of our geotechnical subconsultant, the design plans included remedial activities to alleviate the problems and improve the roadway pavement section. Associated activities included traffic engineering, drainage, public involvement, utility coordination, water/sewer relocation design, and right-of-way acquisition assistance for 36 parcels.
RESULTS
The finished roadway provides a significant improvement to the neighborhood with widened lanes and bike and pedestrian accommodations. In addition, the entire project lies within an area protected from the 100-year floodplain by a levee system. The proposed drainage system was a result of the roadway widening where the existing drainage system was substandard or nonexistent. Inlet spacing was developed in accordance with spread computations and to avoid the numerous existing utilities along the corridor that included water, gas, and sanitary sewer mains, and lateral service connections from the homes along the residential street. The proposed storm sewer system was designed to provide vertical and horizontal clearance with the utilities and connect to an existing storm trunk system for conveyance to the outlet under the levee along the North River.
