HILLSDALE DRIVE EXTENSION

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

This locally administered roadway project involved a nearly one-mile extension of Hillsdale Drive, part of which was on new alignment.

DESIGN , INFRASTRUCTURE

THE CHALLENGE

The project presented several challenging design constraints and unusual construction conditions involving a new traffic signal, roundabout, partial relocation of an existing SWM basin, demolition of a former theatre, bisection (and partial demolition) of an existing commercial strip mall building to accommodate the road extension, 140-foot-long bridge to span a deep ravine, and coordination with the U.S. Postal Service and a local Pepsi-Cola bottling facility to acquire right-of-way from those properties.

HOW WE HELPED

The project included roadway, drainage and stormwater management; bridge design; landscape design and street lighting; signals, signing/pavement marking, traffic control; right-of-way acquisition and utility coordination/design; environmental studies/permitting; extensive public involvement; and construction administration. Most of the project lies within the City of Charlottesville; however, the northern end of the project extended into Albemarle County, thereby requiring additional coordination with the County and the VDOT Culpeper District.

RESULTS

The overall project consisted of designing a new two-lane urban collector roadway with adjacent shared-use path and sidewalk through existing developed properties, including the bisection (and partial demolition) of an existing commercial strip mall building. The project included a new roundabout and 140-foot-length bridge to accommodate the corridor improvements.
