MAIN STREET/MILNWOOD ROAD INTERSECTION
FARMVILLE, VA
This project included the widening of South Main Street (US Route 15) to accommodate additional turn lanes at the South Main Street intersection with Milnwood Road.
THE CHALLENGE
The intersection of South Main Street and Milnwood Road received more than 20,000 vehicles per day and in 2012, had the highest accident rate in Virginia. In addition, multiple new businesses were built in close proximity to the intersection.
HOW WE HELPED
To alleviate the traffic concerns and provide pedestrian accommodations in this mostly commercial area, the Town hired McCormick Taylor to design improvements to fix the traffic interactions and develop a safer intersection. Following the evaluation of multiple reconfiguration ideas and upon concurrence from the Town, McCormick Taylor prepared final construction plans for the project. The intersection improvements included construction of a new turn lane, traffic signal reconstruction, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant crosswalks, sidewalks, curb cuts, and other pedestrian accommodations.
RESULTS
By removing turning traffic from the traffic stream, providing signalized pedestrian crossings and completing missing sidewalk connections, McCormick Taylor was able to mitigate the reasons for the crashes and thereby improve safety, which benefits all roadway users.
