SOUTH RIVER GREENWAY TRAIL PHASE 2A
WAYNESBORO, VA
McCormick Taylor was responsible for preliminary and final design plans for Phase 2A of the South River Greenway Trail which involved the construction of approximately 1,700’ of the asphalt shared use path.
THE CHALLENGE
The trail passed beneath two roadway bridges, one of which was undergoing replacement during trail construction. In addition, the trail crossed over a stream just above its outfall into the South River which necessitated a new pedestrian bridge, which was substantially constructed in one day. Further, the trail goes beneath a railroad (owned by CSX and leased by Buckingham Branch) that required a wood frame canopy to be built between the trail and railroad bridge to protect trail pedestrians.
HOW WE HELPED
McCormick Taylor designed the trail that included both horizontal and vertical challenges. Extensive coordination with the railroad companies and their representatives was provided to allow such improvements to take place. Items included in the plans were grading, storm sewer, bridge/structure, landscape architecture, roadway, signing/pavement marking, and erosion and sediment control. McCormick Taylor also provided environmental permitting, public outreach bid assistance, and construction administration services.
RESULTS
The project utilized Transportation Enhancement funds to provide pedestrian facilities that linked downtown Waynesboro and the nearby Port Republic Road Historic District to the South River.
