Wake County Bridge No. 114

North Carolina Department of Transportation
Wake County, NC

McCormick Taylor is providing comprehensive consulting engineering services for the replacement of Bridge No. 114 over Newlight Creek on SR 1911 in Wake County. The project includes the design of a new 90-foot, single-span bridge and associated roadway improvements.

The Challenge

The project demands tight coordination across roadway, environmental, hydraulic, and structural disciplines to design a structurally sound bridge that minimizes impacts to adjacent wetlands and other surface water features and minimizes the reduction in flood storage capacity of adjacent Falls Lake. Any volume introduced below the flood storage pool needs to be carefully accounted for and balanced by removing volume elsewhere within the project limits. It is critically important to ensure the design is thoroughly vetted to find the best practical solution.

How We Helped

McCormick Taylor is delivering engineering services through an integrated, multi-discipline approach that emphasizes coordination, regulatory compliance, and constructability. Our team is working closely with NCDOT Division 5 to maintain schedule, manage risk, and ensure all deliverables meet Department standards from preliminary design through final sealed plans.

On the environmental side, we are validating the existing Categorical Exclusion (CE) document and preparing updated right-of-way and construction consultations. We are coordinating with Division Environmental staff regarding federally protected species and supporting targeted public outreach efforts to maintain compliance and prevent delays.

Our roadway team is advancing the design from 25% plans through final sealed submittal, incorporating the hydraulic design, geotechnical recommendations, and field inspection comments. Throughout the process, we are maintaining close cost control and schedule adherence while refining quantities and construction details.

For the structural component, we are designing a 90-foot single-span box beam bridge, coordinating geometry, foundation loads, superstructure and substructure elements, and site constraints. The result will be a constructible, code-compliant bridge design ready for permitting and letting.

Results

Through disciplined coordination and technical excellence, McCormick Taylor is taking this project from 25% design through final sealed plans. With final deliverables, NCDOT will be positioned to replace Bridge No. 114 with a modern, code-compliant structure that enhances safety, maintains mobility through a well-planned detour strategy, and meets all environmental and regulatory requirements.
