TEAM SPORTS AT McCORMICK TAYLOR

There is no better way to get to know your colleagues, break down department barriers, get active, and have fun with co-workers than competitive sports! Over the years, McCormick Taylor employees have initiated and embraced various different sports activities and continue to find enjoyment on the field/court and in the workplace because of their involvement. These activities have been especially significant, providing additional support and team building opportunities as our work environment has transitioned in recent years to a hybrid work environment.

Take a look at some of our teams and sports actively occurring this year.

Volleyball Team, Mount Laurel – Ben Chierici, PE

Volleyball is the sport of choice for McCormick Taylor’s Mount Laurel, New Jersey office. They began blocking, digging, and bumping prior to the pandemic and picked it back up again in Fall 2023 playing in the XL Sports World coed league. The indoor program is year-round with different seasons in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer and games on Tuesday nights between 7 and 11 pm. We asked Ben Chierici, PE, Transportation Engineer II, to tell us a little more about his experience with McCormick Taylor’s Mount Laurel Volleyball Team.

What do you enjoy most about being involved with this activity?

Volleyball is a very beginner friendly and team cooperative sport. It is a great sport that anyone can improve on in a short period of time and it requires team cooperation. It is a great team building sport for coworkers.

Are there any noteworthy achievements to mention from our involvement?

We have made the playoffs every season so far!

Can you share a favorite memory from your involvement?

Some of my favorite memories are watching my teammates get into the game and becoming vocal. One of the most memorable would be one of our team members who made multiple consecutive blocks to win the point then screamed and flexed as if he was Brian Dawkins after a big hit.

Softball Team, Philadelphia – Tom Pomager

McCormick Taylor’s Philadelphia Softball Team has been around for more than 20 years playing in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Softball League. The league is full of fierce competitors including many of the engineering consultants McCormick Taylor partners with in the transportation industry. Our team is made up of 22 employees from our Exton and Philadelphia offices and represent various disciplines within the organization from Marketing, to Water Resources, Planning, Engineering, and more. Those that don’t help field the team enjoy cheering them on throughout the season beginning in April and ending in mid-August. We asked Tom Pomager, Payroll Administrator I, to tell us a little more about his experience with McCormick Taylor’s Philadelphia Softball Team.

Are there any noteworthy achievements to mention from our involvement?
We won the championship in 2017!

What do you enjoy most about being involved with this activity?
The best part is getting to know my co-workers outside the office and having Pat Guise (Owner/Chief Visionary Officer) come out to pitch.  Players think it is so awesome to have an owner of such a great company take the time to show up to a few games and play tough alongside them.

Can you share a favorite memory from your involvement?
Our best and proudest moment was when we were finally able to win the championship after so many years of getting so close. We won back in 2017 and it was a great night!

Soccer Team, Baltimore – Jenna Evans, PE

McCormick Taylor’s Baltimore staff dribbled their way back to the soccer field in fall 2023 after a six-year hiatus. The ten-person team joined a coed indoor soccer league through Volo. Teams that play with Volo help to fund free youth programming in Baltimore. With different backgrounds and skill sets, the team set their focus on enjoying the game and comradery rather than winning. The team plans to continue to play in the 2024 fall season which occurs over six weeks. We asked Jenna Evans, PE, Water Resources Engineer II, to tell us a little more about her experience with McCormick Taylor’s Baltimore Soccer Team.

Are there any noteworthy achievements to mention from our involvement?

During the entire season, we won a single game and we acted like we had just won the world cup!

What do you enjoy most about being involved with this activity?

I enjoy getting to interact with people that I don’t normally do. We had people from the GIS, Water Resources, and Highway groups participate.

Can you share a favorite memory from your involvement?

Joe Knieriem had never been a goalie before but he stepped up to the plate for us and can easily be considered the most valuable player of the team! He made some incredible saves!

Bocce Ball Team, Harrisburg - Lisa Thompson

With a ten-person roster, McCormick Taylor’s Harrisburg office Bocce Ball Team is more than ready to get “spocking” during the season. The team plays in the Colonial Park Rotary Summer Bocce League operated by the Rotary Club of Colonial Park and the Lower Paxton Parks and Recreation Department. The league has 24 teams with just four people per team playing each game. One to two games are played weekly in the evenings from the beginning of May to the end of September. The duration of a game can range from 30 to 90 minutes each. The summer league ends with playoffs, a picnic, and monetary prizes. We asked Lisa Thompson, Office Coordinator, to tell us a little more about her experience with McCormick Taylor’s Harrisburg Bocce Ball Team.

How did McCormick Taylor get involved with this activity and how long?

Several years ago,  Ed Semborski told us about it and we entered a few players to fill a team. The following year McCormick Taylor entered our own company team and we have been playing ever since.

Are there any noteworthy achievements to mention from our involvement?

“Two years ago we came in 3rd place (lost in the semifinals by two points to the winning team). We also played in the Ron Marsico Bocce Ball tournament this past fall and we came in 2nd place for that tournament, we played against lots of seasoned players. This was the best we have ever done in this tournament.

What do you enjoy most about being involved with this activity?
It’s fun to interact with coworkers outside the office.
