Congratulations to Virginia Bailey who was elected to the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) Harrisburg Section’s 2021-2022 Board of Directors.
Virginia's initial introduction to ASHE Harrisburg was when she was a 17-year-old high school senior. She was already accepted into Penn State’s College of Engineering and applied for ASHE Harrisburg’s scholarship. After an in-person interview by a panel, she was awarded a scholarship and attended the Section’s 1992 Past Presidents Dinner to accept the award.
Although Virginia ended up being more interested in an environmental major and not engineering by the time she graduated from Penn State, she was still interested in the transportation field and landed an entry-level environmental position with McCormick Taylor. Several years later, Virginia attended a few ASHE Harrisburg lunch events and decided to become a member.
"As part of the Board of Directors, I’m excited to roll up my sleeves and help support and guide the organization, bringing both a non-engineer and a female transportation professional perspective," Virginia said. "My areas of interest are educational and mentoring opportunities for members, as well as participation in the scholarship program that I had benefited from.”
As a Senior Manager of Environmental Services, Virginia is responsible for managing environmental and cultural resource groups in Harrisburg, State College, and Pittsburgh. Her technical expertise includes NEPA compliance and Section 4(f) for projects, training, and policy development.
